Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres looks to the future with new distribution centre

August 2014

Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres has recently opened the doors to its new distribution and customer service centre in Victoria. The facility, located in the western suburb of Truganina, is the largest single user tyre distribution centre in Australia and the latest demonstration of Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres’ commitment to creating sustainable economic value in the local market.

The 23,000 sqm distribution centre replaces the company’s previous premises in Somerton. In a major improvement over its previous facilities, the Truganina centre has the capacity to hold up to 250,000 tyres at one time and distribute over 1.3million tyres each year to customers in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Southern New South Wales.

Each year, the centre will receive over 3000 shipping containers of tyres servicing Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres’ consumer, commercial and four-wheel drive segments from 70 locations across the world, including Europe, China, Indonesia and Latin America to name a few.

In addition to housing all storage and distribution facilities, the building is also home to Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres’ new customer service centre. Combining both its customer service and distribution functions brings together the key customer-focused team members across supply chain, sales and call centre, offering a start to finish solution from sales order through to dispatch, all in the one building.

Key planning and design elements of the centre include:
 Centre of gravity customer analysis which has identified Truganina as the optimal geographic location in Melbourne to e-service Goodyear customers
 First safety: state-of-the-art fire retardant system that protects first, employees, as well as tyres
 14 docks with self-adjusting leveller security locks which improves safety for warehouse operations
 For energy conservation, there isn’t a single light switch in the building - all lights are activated by motion sensors

 Modular design for flexing up capacity or flexing down which ensures the size of the distribution centre matches the future needs of the customer base
 Layout design based on thermal mapping to locate fast moving stock versus slow moving stock
 Investment in radio frequency picking technology which ensures accurate and efficient selection for customer orders
 Traffic flow management system that results in efficient and safe flow of trucks

Commenting on the opening, Thierry Villard, Managing Director of Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres ANZ said, “The creation of the combined distribution and customer service centre is the first step of our customer focused journey and one we are very proud of. Our aim is to rejuvenate and transform our organisation into a more nimble marketing and sales organisation, in order to successfully meet the ever changing requirements and behaviours of our customers and end users.
The Truganina centre is the second major distribution investment in our Australian network, after Eastern Creek in New South Wales, and one that we intend to continually grow alongside the success of the business.”
